Learn Jazz Guitar

Within the remit of guitar is many types, styles and sub types; to learn jazz guitar is one such discipline. As with all types of musical instruments you will need to begin with standard basics before getting more adventurous. With guitars that means learning the basic notes and chord sequences, then learning how to combine them. You will need theses basics before progressing to any speciality as they all use the same chords but in different ways.

The basics for jazz guitar will be taught in the same ways as when you first learn the guitar, using basic guitar tables which will show you what strings to press while strumming which strings. The basic chords are the same as ever but the difference comes in the way they are combined and which chords are used.

There are names for the various chord sequences used in jazz guitar but it’s pointless to name them without you actually playing and practising as until then they will be meaningless. Suffice to say when learned they will help you to play jazz style guitar, this can be used exclusively for jazz playing or can be incorporated in other styles.

There are as with every guitar style numerous ways to learn and to practise. However good you are a whilst you learn jazz guitar, a visit or two to a teacher can’t hurt, similarly use of tuition books or DVDs can help. If you are learning from scratch then the course you are following will probably make reference to jazz styles and will probably include some teaching.

Another trick to learn jazz guitar, that applies to all styles is too watch how your favorite players play their songs and how they work through chord sequences. Many of these songs will be available in both guitar tablature and in regular music notation.

When you mix together the teachings, the chords and notes you learn and add the jazz variation you should ended up with the sound you want or at least a new sound and style to use.
